
7 Arrested As Agitators Attack Police Station In Lagos, Takeover FRCN Radio In Ibadan, Declares Yoruba Nation
Heavily armed group who identified themselves as Yoruba Nation Army on Sunday early morning simultaneously attacked a police station in Lagos and takeover Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria in Ibadan, Oyo State, chanting “Yoruba Nation has come to stay. Yoruba no more under Federal Republic of Nigeria”.
Police commands both in Oyo and Lagos States confirmed the arrest of five of the attackers in Ibadan and two out of the fifteen heavily armed group that attacked police station at Alausa area in Lagos.
It was gathered that the Yoruba Nation agitators at about 5 o’clock on Sunday morning hijacked Amuludun 99.1 FM in Ibadan, seized the FRCN station for one hour and broadcast live.
According to Tribune newspaper, the suspects invaded the station with various forms of charms.
The General Manager of the station, Mr. Stephen Agbaje, confirmed the development and said thus; “Some group of agitators came around in the night, and took over the station, but the situation has been brought under control by the security agents. They were able to recover the station, and some arrests have been made,”.
“The alleged agitators took over the station and broadcasted live. Among their claims included “Oodua Nation has come to stay. “Yoruba no more under Federal Republic of Nigeria. United Nation will soon declare Oodua Nation, among other things”, Tribune newspaper stated in its report.
Lagos State Police Command Spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, in a news release few hours ago, said armed Yoruba Nation agitators around 5:35 hours of Sunday early morning attacked the Alausa Police Division, injured some policemen.
The Police spokesman said the armed group numbering about fifteen took off when a police back up team arrived the scene but two of the attackers were arrested.
The Police statement reads in quote;
“The Lagos State Police Command has arrested two Yoruba Nation Agitators in the early hours of today.
“The agitators, numbering fifteen, had stormed Alausa Police Division at about 05:35 hours today, chanting, ‘Yoruba Nation has taken over,’ and injured some police officers who attempted to disperse them. Two of the agitators were arrested while the rest took to their heels following the prompt and coordinated response of the police.
“The suspects who were arrested with charms, dangerous weapons and different offensive insignias bearing Yoruba Nation Army, stormed Alausa Division along with others at about the same time another set of the group was attempting to take over a radio station in Ibadan, Oyo State.
“They claimed they came to officially inform the Police that the United Nations had granted approval for the take off of Yoruba Nation.
“The arrested suspects are currently assisting the Police in the ongoing investigation into the subversive plans of the group as well as their network of sponsors, all of whom will soon be unveiled and brought to deserved justice in the overriding internal security interest of the State.
“The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Idowu Owohunwa, uses this medium to warn all subversive elements to steer clear of the state as the Command is fully ready and has the strong will and operational orientation to bring the full weight of the law to bear on them or on any other elements that might attempt to disrupt the stable security order in Lagos.
“The CP notes that the Command, while working in synergy with other security agencies, has maximally deployed its intelligence, human and operational assets across the length and breadth of the state to effectively suppress any ill-advised person or groups under any nomenclature who might be attempting to test the law enforcement will of the Command before, during and after the May 29, 2023 inauguration.
“CP Owohunwa equally appreciates the good people of Lagos State for their unrelenting cooperation with the police and urges them to continue to manifest their patriotism by promptly reaching out to the police or nearest security agency whenever the need arises”.
