Killing Of Female Student Over Alleged Blasphemy In Sokoto Unjustifiable – Sultan

Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar has described as condemnable the killing of a student of Shehu Shagari College of Education, Deborah Yakubu over alleged blasphemous statement against Prophet Mohammed.

The Sultan in a Press statement signed by the Danburan, Secretary, Sultanate Council of Sokoto, Saidu Muhammadu Maccido said everyone should remain calm and the security operatives should bring the perpetrators of the incident to justice.

Sultan of Sokoto described the killing of the female student as unjustifiable.

“The Sultanate Council has learnt with dismay the unfortunate happenings at the Shehu Shagari College of Education, (SSCOE) Sokoto that led to the loss of life of a female student of the Institution.

“The Sultanate Council condemned the incident in it’s totality and has urged the security agencies to bring perpetrators of the unjustifiable incident to justice.

“The Sultanate Council has urged all to remain calm and ensure peaceful co-existence among all people of the State and nation”, Sultan said.

It would be recalled that a victim identified as Deborah Yakubu, 200 level Home Economics student at the Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto was beaten and burnt to death on allegations of blasphemy against Prophet Mohammed SAW on Thursday morning.

Something has to give. For the avoidance of doubt, the emergency I call for should follow the steps prescribed by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended), and case law, by leaving all democratically elected state and local government structures intact. The rationale is quite simple: We cannot win the war on terror by continuing with the same strategies we have deployed over the last five years. That they have not worked is very glaring, with the Government Science Secondary School, Kankara incidence being the latest in a long line of proofs. If we must get better results, we must implement better strategies. Strategies that may have to include the temporary stoppage of the boarding school system in all the affected states, in favour of a day students approach, until the situation is brought under control. Strategies that must include 24 hours armed military guard for each school in the affected states. No sacrifice is too great to make to return law and order to the affected communities, and that must be the singular focus of the Federal Government until this menace is eradicated.
