One of the policemen that escorted newly purchased vehicles from Abuja, heading to Imo State was mistakenly killed by soldiers at the military checkpoint in Ihiala after the security operative escaped Unknown Gunmen attack at Uli community, along the Onitsha-Owerri road, in the Ihiala local government area of Anambra State.
It was gathered that the incident occured last Saturday night.
We learnt that the group of policemen escorting newly purchased Jeep vehicles, up to about 30, arrived Enugu State from Abuja late.
The policemen proceeded on the journey and arrived Onitsha, in Anambra state very late and some of the police operatives changed plans.
Security sources said, some of the team of Policemen decided to discontinue the journey to Imo State that night and proceeded to Asaba, in Delta State to pass the night.
But, other policemen decided to continue their journey to Imo State.
On getting to Ihiala, the policemen were ambushed and attacked at Uli community, shortly after the military checkpoint between Ihiala main town and Uli community.
It was also gathered that the policemen ran into the bush.
Unconfirmed report indicated that the Unknown Gunmen took possession of some of the vehicles and kidnapped some of the security operatives along with them.
One of the policemen who escaped the attack, came out from the bush and drove one of the new Jeeps, back to the military checkpoint for his own safety but was unlucky, as the soldiers who suspected the full speed, one way driving towards them as Unknown Gunmen attack, opened fire on the escaping policeman, killing him at the spot
The security sources said the vehicle has since been taken to Ihiala Divisional Police Station and remains of the policeman deposited at the morgue.
