Edo Farmers Killed In Eware, Oshiomhole Kinsmen Raise Alarm Against Herders
Another set of Edo farmers, named Lucky Salami and Julius Arewa have been macheted to death at Eware community in the Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo State by attackers the villagers suspected to be Fulani Herdsmen, days after suspected herders killed other farmers in the state at Erah, Eguare, Okpekpe among others; with the kinsmen of the current Senator representing Edo North who was once the governor of the state, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole calling on the government to rescue them from Fulani herdsmen they claimed are responsible for the frequent attacks both on lives and the destructions of their farmlands in the Edo North Senatorial District often known as Afemai land.
A video published earlier in January 2025, some group of hunters and vigilante members could be heard in the video begging the Edo State government led by Monday Okpebholo to return the fire arms they were he collected from them, adding that, since the government recovered the fire arms from them, the herdsmen have been attacking them, killing people in Edo villages and destroying farmlands.
The group of hunters and vigilante members who appeared not to be in a good mood, said that they decided to do the video statement because they were entering a forest in Aviele, one of the clans that made up Etsako West council area with just knives and cutlasses to search and rescue three people that were kidnapped by suspected herders whom they claimed came to abduct the people with AK-47 rifles and pump action guns.
It was gathered that the suspected herdsmen on Thursday killed the two farmers identified as Lucky Salami and Julius Arewa in Eware Village, Etsako West Local Government Area with machetes.
The Etsako West Local Government confirmed the attack, according to Punch Newspaper and said the third person identified as Omokhagbon Abu popularly known as Udugboya is battling for his life at an undisclosed hospital.
Punch Newspaper reported that the chairman of Etsako West Local Government Area, Marvelous Zibiri, who confirmed the incident to their correspondent on Thursday, said the killings took place in Eware Village, Ward 8 Anwain and that the killers were suspected to be Fulani herdsmen
In a press statement issued by the President of the Anwain Progress Union, Barrister R O Isenalumhe, the group said; “the last two weeks have been very challenging for the people of the Anwain clan in Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo State as a result of the murderous activities of Fulani herdsmen in the clan.
Anwain clan is ward 8 in Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo State. The access road to the clan is the Agbede-Anwain Road which runs through Agbede town. The clan has one of the largest forest reserves in Edo North.
In the last two weeks, Fulani headsmen have invaded the Clan. They have not only destroyed crops but have engaged in killing and maiming of the inhabitants.
On February 13, 2025, they brutally killed one person and maimed another in their farms at Iyoba village in Anwain clan and today the February 27, 2025, they have brutally killed another in his farm at Eware village in Anwain clan.
When the first incident took place, I wrote as the President of Anwain Progress Union to alert the Governor of Edo state, the commissioner of police and the DSS.
In my letter, I warned that the situation may degenerate if no prompt action is taken. The situation has now degenerated.
Since my letter to the Governor of Edo State and the security agencies, two persons have been killed and another kidnapped. The person kidnapped only regained freedom after two weeks in their captivity.
As a result of the aforesaid activities of the Fulani headsmen, our people have abandoned their farms for fear of being killed.
I humbly use this medium to call on the Edo State Government, the police, the DSS and other security agencies to intervene”, Isenalumhe stated.
We had reported that the Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo has blamed militants and herders over the killing of 24 persons in Maidoti, Gbelomonti among other 5 villages in the Ovia South West Local Government Area and Okpekpe in the Etsako East Local Government area of Edo State, says, he has deployed more troops to the affected communities, with AIT news media showed on the spot assessment video footage of some residents fleeing the communities, just as another report indicated that a little boy was also killed on Friday at Eguare Irrua in the Esan Central Local Government Area of the state.
We had reproted that the immediate past Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki has sent some words of sympathy to the people of Okpekpe community in the Etsako East Local Government Area of Edo State following the killing of two persons; Batemue Philip aka Ebo and Christopher Bello by suspected herdsmen on Monday, calling on the state governor, Monday Okpebholo and other authorities responsible for the security of the state to act swiftly, just as the council chairperson in charge of the local government, Benedicta Attoh raised alarm that if the state government fails to act fast, the entire North Ibie people maybe wiped out by the suspected Fulani herders, with another report of the Head of the Vigilante group in Erah Community in the Owan East Local Government Area of the State,Victor Ogendegbe also killed in cold blood by attackers suspected to be fulani herdsmen.
Previously, we reported that the Edo State Command of the Nigeria Police Force has confirmed the killing of seven persons on Friday during a communal clash between the people of Gbelemonti and Maidoti communities in the Ovia South West Local Government of Edo State, with the police also arresting a member of the Edo State Vigilante group who shot dead and set ablaze a victim he falsely accused of being a thief out of malice due to misunderstanding the vigilante member had with the deceased; just as the new commissioner of police, Enekpen Otimenyin subjects police personnel in the state to retraining.
