FG Holds Nnamdi Kanu Responsible For ENDSARS Protest In Lagos, 80 BRT Burnt Buses

As Federal High Court sitting in Abuja today adjourned the continuation of trial of the Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu till tomorrow Wednesday, one of the 15 newly amended terrorism and treasonable felony count charges indicated that the detained Biafra leader is being accused of the violent ENDSARS protest that erupted in Lagos State in October 2020 that led to mass destruction and burning of Lagos State transport system and Bus Rapid Transit, BRT vehicles at Oyingbo and Ojodu Berger areas of Lagos State on October 21, 2020 following public mass unrest that started immediately some hours after men of the Nigeria military allegedly killed large numbers of armless and peaceful ENDSARS protesters at Lekki tollgate on October 20, 2020.

Count 14 of the newly amended 15 count terrorism charges preferred against Nnamdi Kanu reads thus:

“That you Nnamdi Kanu, Male, Adult, of Afaranukwu lbeku, Umuahia North Local Government Area of Abia State on diverse dates between 2018 and 2021 made a broadcast received and heard in Nigeria within the Jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, with intent to incite violence in furtherance of an act of terrorism against the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the people of Nigeria, you directed members of the Public to destroy Public Transport system in Lagos, resulting in major economic loss to the Government and you there by committed an offence punishable under section 1 (2) h) of the terrorism Prevention Amendment Act 2013”.

It would be recalled that Nigeria Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami had in a press conference with Journalists on 22, October, 2021 accused Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB led by Nnamdi Kanu for being responsible for the violent ENDSARS protest in Lagos state most especially the destruction of properties and the attack on the Oba of Lagos Palace through his online broadcast.

“The EndSARS protests of October 2020 played into the sinister plans of Nnamdi Kanu, whereby he seized the protests through subversive and inciting online broadcasts and actively commanded and directed attacks on security personnel and facilities.

“That there were several IPOB/ESN attacks and destruction (arson) of public and private properties during the EndSARS and Biafra agitations across the country, especially in the South-East and South-South regions, notably the Palace of the Oba of Lagos where twelve (12) flats were completely looted and vandalized.

“Lagos State DNA and Forensic Centre, City Hall Race Course, First Bank Branch Lagos, Lagos State Public Works Commission, Nigeria Port Authority (NPA), Marina, Lagos, High Court Igbosere, Lagos, were all burnt, amongst other heinous crimes committed.

“The country home of the Governor of Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodinma, was burnt, over one hundred and fifty (150) buses burnt at the Lagos Bus Terminal, Senator Ndoma Egba’s home in Calabar Municipal, Cross River State, was completely looted and vandalized.

“As a result of these broadcasts, members of IPOB attacked and killed security personnel and burnt down police stations, correctional centers, INEC offices, bus terminals, the Palace of Oba of Lagos, banks, hospitals, shopping malls and vehicles, amongst others,” the AGF alleged.

Lagos State Government through the state Commissioner for Information, Gbenga Omotosho, had in October 2020 stated that 23 big BRT buses were razed down, while 57 medium-size BRT buses were affected by the ENDSARS violence, which brings the total of the BRT vehicles destroyed to 80.

The spokesperson for the Lagos State Government, Gbenga Omotosho said 23 of the 80 BRT buses burnt by the hoodlums were at Ojodu, while the remaining 57 were at the Oyingbo area.

Gbenga Omotosho estimated the value cost of the damaged buses at 3.9 billion naira.

The ENDSARS protest started peacefully across several states in Nigeria after men of the now defunct Special Anti Robbery Squad, SARS arrested a suspect who jumped out of the moving police vehicle in Delta State. The moment was recorded and published online by a good samaritan and the questionable activities of the personnel of SARS quickly came to minds of many and on daily basis, protest began to mount across several states in the country, calling for the scrapping of the Special Anti Robbery Squad and the need for Nigeria Police Authority to ensure there is end to police brutality and summary killing of Nigeria youths most especially those who fail to pay ransom to bail themselves from the false or fake criminal allegation leveled against them by men of the Nigeria Police Force.

The protest became violent in Benin City, the Edo State capital when some group of boys suspected to be sponsored by government attacked peaceful protesters at the Oba Ovonramwen square or Ring road and beat one of the protesters to death.

Edo youths who appeared less concern about the ENDSARS protest became more interested and very very aggressive when they learnt that the thugs that killed the peaceful protester were brought in and sponsored by government.

Friday and Saturday, being October 16 and 17 respectively saw hundreds of Edo youths moved in to the Oba Ovonramwen square located at the centre of Benin City, ran into some persons suspected to be sponsored thugs employed by the government to chase away the peaceful protesters, video posted shows group of boys beating one of suspected thugs but it could not be ascertained if the victim later died.

The following day being Sunday evening, there was mounted tension in Benin City as rumour have it that many of the Edo youths have planned to start their own ENDSARS protest on Monday 19, 2020.

Information gathered that by the eve of the planned Monday protest, many police stations in the city area were already deserted and many police officers reportedly refused to resume for work on Monday, the 19th day of October.

The rumour actually became a thing of reality. As early as 5 o’clock in the morning, it was gathered that almost all the major streets in Benin City have been taking over by the angry youths as they were seen playing and cooking on the roads.

The whole city was on standstill. Every motorable road blocked and travelers held stranded in the bush.

The protest took another dimension when some of the group of protesters in search of the employed government thugs diverted attention to prisons and police stations.

But no life was lost. Estimated 1,900 inmates were set free when thousands of the Edo youth protesters invaded the Benin prison at Sapele road and Oko prison.

Police stations at Oba Market area and other areas in the city were vandalized and police items looted. Suspects set free. Police vehicles and buildings set ablaze.

A day after the Benin violent ENDSARS protest, Lagos State residents came out more en mass on October 20, 2020 and started searching for government sponsored thugs.

Protest became more violent in Lagos when the angry protesters moved into police stations, set buildings ablaze and started killing police officers as seen in the viral videos.

This made the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu to impose curfew to start same day 4 pm.

But the angry Lagos protesters disobeyed the Lagos State Government curfew order and gathered en mass at the lekki tollgate.

Soon, information through online media filtered in that the men of the Nigerian Army have attacked and massacred large numbers of the armless and peaceful protesters who gathered at the Lekki tollgate.

The whole world appeared awake on that October 20, 2020 night hearing the unfortunate story.

Many believed Nigeria military committed genocide and massacred peaceful ENDSARS protesters at lekki tollgate.

As early as 8 O’clock in the morning of October 21, 2020, almost the entire places in Lagos State was already on fire.

Angry residents in large numbers moved and destroyed properties in solidarity for those presumed dead in the alleged military attack on peaceful protesters at Lekki tollgate.

The angry residents burnt down Bus Rapid Transit vehicles and attacked, destroyed a lot of Lagos State and Federal Government properties. Private property like TVC was not spared as presenters have to abandon live programme and run for safety. The Oba of Lagos Palace was attacked, the Oba whisked away for safety by security Operatives. Traditional symbol of Staff office in a viral video seen stolen and the entire Palace vandalized.

Thereafter, the violent ENDSARS protest spread across several states in the country like Anambra, Rivers State, Cross River State, among others. Angry residents hunted for security Operatives and killed numbers of Police men and soldiers.
