Many Arrested As Okada Riders Attack Police Station In Lagos Over Motorcycle Ban
Nigeria Police Force has confirmed that a locally made gun was recovered on Monday morning from group of Okada riders who attacked a police station in Lagos State.
According to the spokesperson of the Lagos State Police Command, Benjamin Hundeyin, many of the attackers of who are motorcycle riders often referred to as Okada riders were arrested with two of the attackers seriously injured.
It was gathered that over 100 of the attackers invaded the Ipaja Police Station in Lagos State, Nigeria resulting to heavy gun shooting by men of the Nigeria Police Force after the security operatives crackdown on Okada riders and impounded their motorcycles.
It would be recalled that on May 18, 2022, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu announced ban on motorcycles during a meeting with police chiefs in the state, saying it is “total and indefinite”. The affected local councils are Ikeja, Surulere, Eti-Osa, Lagos Mainland, Lagos Island, and Apapa.
“After a critical review of our restriction on Okada activities in the first six local government areas where we restricted them on February 1, 2020, we have seen that the menace has not abated.
“We are now directing a total ban on Okada activities across the highways and bridges within these six local government and their local council development areas, effective from June 1, 2022″, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu stated in quote in a statement issued after the ban on Okada activities in 2022.
The Lagos State Police Command in a statement few hours ago stated that two individuals were fatally injured and some others arrested during an attack by motorcycle riders on its Ipaja Division on Monday.
Benjamin Hundeyin said that the attack stemmed from the enforcement of the existing ban on motorcycles in the state, saying over 200 motorcycles were impounded and one locally made firearm retrieved from the attackers.
In a statement he issued and made available to the public, he said thus: “Officers of Ipaja Police Division have successfully repelled an early morning attack on their division by motorcycle operators.
The attack came after police officers commenced the day’s enforcement of the existing ban on motorcycles in Lagos State.
The attackers, who came in their hundreds, stormed the station with dangerous weapons, shooting at the officers and attempting to overrun the station.
While officers and men of the division held their ground, reinforcement came from the Area Command and the Rapid Response Squad. Two of the attackers were fatally injured during the attack.
However, this did not deter the officers from accomplishing their mandate, as over two hundred motorcycles were impounded and some of the attackers arrested, with one locally made firearm retrieved.
THe Police Command will not be cowed into abdicating its responsibilities of enforcement of all duly passed laws and maintenance of law and order within the society.”
In April, 2023, a police inspector was killed and the Divisional Police Officer was injured after Okada riders clashed with police in Lagos State over the government ban on motorcycles.
The clash between the commercial motorcycle riders known as Okada and policemen led to the death of the policeman at Cele bus stop, Lagos State.
According to Hundeyin, the two police officers were attacked while enforcing the existing motorcycle ban in parts of Lagos State.
He said that the incident resulted in the arrest of two suspects and the impoundment of forty-one motorcycles.
“While enforcing the existing ban on the use of motorcycles in parts of Lagos State, Police Officers of Isolo Division came under attack from motorcycle riders at Cele bus-stop, resulting in the death of one Police Inspector and serious injury to the Divisional Police Officer (DPO).
Two suspects have been arrested while forty-one motorcycles were impounded.
The Lagos State Police Command will not be deterred from carrying out its mandate of enforcing duly established laws.
“Citizens are urged to remain law-abiding, as riders and passengers alike arrested on prohibited routes will face the law. Above all, any form of attack on Police Officers will no longer be tolerated”, the police spokesperson had stated in quote in a statement he issued in April, 2023 following the attack.
Before that, there was a report in January 2023, that there was a mayhem in Abule Egba as Okada riders, Taskforce clashed.
We learnt that irate Okada riders and the Lagos Taskforce officials clashed in Abule Egba area of Lagos, Southwest Nigeria on in the morning following the seizure of their bikes by the police.
May 18, 2023 as reported by Punch Newspaper: “the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Idowu Owohunwa, visited the okada rider, who was assaulted by some police officers in a viral video.
Three policemen were seen in a viral video brutalising the Okada man. One of the policemen was seen hitting his baton on the man as another one was pushing him away. The man, who tried to wrestle his bike with the policemen, sustained injury as he held on to his forehead where blood was seen gushing out from.
The third policeman rode away on the victim’s bike while the two others immediately left the scene in a tricycle.
According to the State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, in a series of tweets via his Twitter account, said that Owohunwa condemned the policemen’s actions and told the public that disciplinary action had already been taken against the men.
He said, “CP Idowu Owohunwa today visited the young man involved in this incident and members/leadership of Hausa community in Abattoir Market, Agege.
“The CP, who condemned the excessive use of force by the policemen in enforcing the existing ban on use of motorcycles in certain parts of Lagos State, has assured members of the public that the disciplinary measures already initiated against the men would be brought to a logical conclusion and the outcome made public.
“The Command will continue to ensure that the rule of law is upheld, while not relenting in enforcing the laws of the land”
