
Obaseki Bans ‘Ashawo’ In Edo, Begins Mass Arrest
Edo State Government under the leadership of Governor Godwin Obaseki has began the mass arrest of street prostitutes often referred to as Ashawo or night workers.
A campaign poster made available to the public before the mass arrest commenced in some major locations around the Benin metropolis on Monday, indicated that the government wants the commercial sex workers chased out of the Ihama, Sakpoba, G.R.A, Sapele road, Ugbowo road, Dawnson, Upper Mission Extension, and Ekewan road in the state capital.
The Governor in the poster also indicated that all brotels and motels in the state must cease henceforth to accommodate commercial sex workers.
A video of mass arrest of the suspected prostitutes around Ihama area in Benin City on Monday showed the night workers; took to their heels while security operatives go after them.
Governor Godwin Obaseki is yet to officially state the reason behind the decision to chase sex workers out of the state.
But fillers had it that the reason may not be unconnected with insecurity, as most sex workers provide good information to kidnappers and other criminal elements in the state and elsewhere.
