Police Arrests Officers, PoS Operator Over ₦30m Alleged Armed Robbery, Extortion
Nigeria Police Force has arrested some of its security operatives and a POS operator over allegations of armed robbery and extortion of a victim to the tune of ₦30 million.
A statement by the Force spokesperson, Olumuyiwa Adejobi issued and made available on Sunday indicated that the erring officers alongside the POS operator have been arrested, investigated and they are currently undergoing trial.
The police statement reads thus: “In furtherance of our zero tolerance for corruption and extortion, we wish to update the general public on an alleged case of armed robbery, abduction, and extortion carried out by some policemen against one Omoh Oshoke, an Abuja resident.
The trio identified as Inspectors Francis Ahuean, Semiu Agbaakin, and Osagie Efford, all attached to the FID-STS, have been arrested, investigated and are currently undergoing trial.
In the same vein, the accomplices including one Elizabeth Amos Busayo, the POS operator and one Thomas Michael, who acted as an informant for the offending police officers, have also been arrested and are currently being investigated alongside the police officers.
The Force however assures that justice will be served in this case, while we urge our officers to always act and continue to operate within the ambit of the law”.
It would be recalled that the Nigeria Police Force had arrested some police officers who extorted their victim up to the tune of ₦30,300,000 in Abuja early this year.
A statements by the Force spokesperson, Olumuyiwa Adejobi had indicated that some of the suspected police officers who ran into exile upon the commencement of investigation into the crime were later arrested and held in police custody while awaiting disciplinary action.
The statement tagged; “EXTORTION: POLICE ARREST OFFICERS RESPONSIBLE FOR ₦30 million THEFT IN ABUJA”, indicated that the crime was allegedly committed by some policemen attached to Special Tactical Squad in Abuja.
Adding, the police authority acted based on a complaint received via X social media network logged by a member of the public.
The statement reads in quotes: “Following the recent act of extortion by some officers of the Nigeria Police attached to the Special Tactical Squad in Abuja who extorted a member of the public of the sum of Thirty Million, Three Hundred Thousand Naira, which was brought to the notice of the Force via the X Platform, the Nigeria Police wishes to reveal and announce that significant progress has been made in apprehending the officers and their accomplices responsible for this unprofessional conduct as the squad who initially escaped upon commencement of investigations have been arrested and are currently in custody.
The Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, as part of his commitment to upholding the highest standards of integrity and accountability within the Nigeria Police Force, has ordered the commencement of disciplinary proceedings to ensure that justice is served swiftly and decisively.
These disciplinary measures underscore the zero-tolerance stance of the Nigeria Police Force towards any form of misconduct or corruption among its ranks.
The IGP also emphasized the imperativeness that those found to have violated the trust placed in them by the public face the full consequences of their actions, as such behavior not only tarnishes the reputation of the Force but also undermines the collective efforts to maintain law and order in our country.
