Prison Inmates Escape As Floodwater Overflow Houses, Bridges, Roads In Maiduguri
Numbers of Prison inmates have been reported to have escape the Maiduguri Maximum correctional centre holding some high profile terrorists following the collapse of the Alau Dam which the fast spreading floodwater have submerged houses, bridges and displaced thousands of residents in Borno State.
According to local media, shortly after the floodwater destroyed the wall fence of the prison, some inmates drowned; while many others swam their way out and escaped.
Hausa Room reported earlier on Tuesday that there is Prison Break in Maiduguri following flooding. Adding security forces fired shots in response.
Another local media reported that the prison is Maiduguri Maximum Security Correctional facility in the State Low-Cost area of Maiduguri within the Maiduguri Local government area of Borno State. Adding the incident occurred early hours on Tuesday.
SharaHareporters reported that “Not fewer than 200 inmates have escaped after a devastating flood pulled down a prison wall in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.
An official of the Nigerian Correctional Center in Maiduguri told SaharaReporters on Tuesday that over 200 inmates escaped from the facility after a portion of the facility’s parameter fence was pulled down in the aftermath of the flood that ravaged the city on Tuesday.
The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, disclosed that some Boko Haram commanders held at the Maiduguri New Prison were among those who escaped.
The source said, “The rain was torrential and caused terrible flood which affected our facility.
“Part of the wall of the Maiduguri New Prison collapsed and some Boko Haram commanders held in our facility have escaped with other prisoners. Those who escaped are more than 200 in all.”
“We were able to move 200 other inmates to a different facility,” the officer added.
In a stark contradiction to the Borno State government’s earlier assurances, the flood situation in Maiduguri took a turn for the worse on Tuesday, just four days after officials claimed to have implemented comprehensive preventive measures”
Reports from local media also indicated that major roads, houses, and shops in Maiduguri metropolis, the Borno State capital, and parts of the Jere Local Government Area have been submerged by floodwaters.
Also submerged by the floodwater included the Shehu’s Palace, the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, and Sanda Kyarimi Park Zoo were some of the animals were seen on the street.
The prison wall located along the Custom area was said to have been broken by the floodwater as some inmates reportedly drowned while several others escaped for their lives.
Major roads within the state capital including the Post-Office Roundabout which links major locations in the capital were seen in videos posted online flooded thereby cutting off vehicular movement within the metropolis.
The Abbaganaram, Custom Road along which the flooded prison is located, Tashan Bama, Custom Road, Monday Market, Gamboru Market Custom Area, Cattle Market in old Maiduguri, Gwange area, Lagos Street are all communities affected by the flood, according to local media reports.
The Maiduguri Zoo’s popularity known as Sanda Kyarimi Zoo Park was also flooded.
The General Manager of the Zoo, Ali Abacha, reportedly said 80 percent of the animals in the zoo have been killed by the flood while the others have escaped into the city capital.
Thousands of residents living along waterways and flood-prone areas have been displaced, the majority of whom are women and children.
Several shop owners and small-scale businesses are also affected by the flood.
Touring across safer areas within Maiduguri, thousands of women and children are relocating along with their belongings.
Many of them are seen taking refuge under trees at the major roads.
The floodwater is caused by the collapse of the Alau Dam which is said to be a major source of water supply to Maiduguri which draws its source from River Ngadda in Cameroon and the Lake Chad.
When contacted the spokesperson for the Nigerian Correctional Service, Abubakar Umar, regarding the issue, he said, “We’re taking stock across the country. I can speak to the press two hours from now, so please, according to SharaReporters.
The flooding has engulfed the State Specialist Hospital in Maiduguri, UMTH, Lagos Street Bridge and other places as seen in the videos posted online.
A photograph posted online showed a man and his family have become homeless as a result of the flooding.
Muhammadu Goni, 48 old man was also seen in a video pointing at his house completely submerged in floodwater on Tuesday in Maiduguri.
The father of six as reported by HumAngle said he has been separated from his wife and children by the tragic flood.
The fast-moving waters have overwhelmed central Maiduguri, submerging key locations, including the Shehu of Borno’s palace, the state Secretariat, the zoo, the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital and the central cemetery, HumAngle reported.
Nigeria state owned Television station, NTA reported that “Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, is experiencing flood levels not seen since 1994.
This phenomenon has affected the zoo in the capital, with wild animals seen on the streets”.
We gathered that Hundreds of people started evacuating their homes as early as 2am on Tuesday early morning night due to the flood that was engulfing Maiduguri in a faster move.
