Super Eagles Have Made Us Proud To Be Nigerians – Tinubu
Nigeria President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu has said the Super Eagles football team have made all the citizens in the country to be proud to be Nigerians.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu stated this yesterday via his personal social media handle in celebration of Nigeria victory against South Africa in the Semi final of Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON match played on Wednesday in Côte d’Ivoire.
The victory recorded by the Super Eagles will be further contested by the host nation, Ivory Coast on Sunday as both countries will be meeting for the 2024 AFCON finals.
“From the Southernmost cape of Africa to the Plains of Mauritania and the coast of West Africa…. You have made us all Proud to be Nigerians! Go… Soar in the AFCON Finals. Well done, boys!”, President Bola Tinubu said in quotes.
It would be recalled that the Super Eagles of Nigeria beat Bafana Bafana of South Africa 4-2 in penalties to be at the African Cup of Nations finals.
The Super Eagles secured a penalty after one of the cynosure of all eyes at the game, Victor Osimhen was brought down in the box by Mothobi Mvala (South Africa) at the Stade de la Paix in Bouake, Ivory Coast.
Nigeria was leading 1-0 at 67 minutes of the game.
Punch Newspaper analysis reported that; “Nigeria had sealed the game with a 2-0 lead when Osimhen scored as he latched on to a pass inside the penalty box and fired a strike, which went inside the left post. However, a VAR review verdict said that there was no goal for Nigeria due to a foul in the build-up play. The decision was overturned, and a penalty was given to South Africa.
Bafana Bafana reacted with a 1-1 goal from the spot when Teboho Mokoena of South Africa played the penalty past Stanley Nwabili into the bottom left corner.
South Africa had the clearest chance to seal the game after Evidence Makgopa had his shot flashed high over the bar after beating the defender, following a rebound after a freekick saved by Nwabali.
The game, which entered extra time, saw big chances from both teams.
Moffi was brought down at the edge of the box. South Africa was shown a red card following the tackle.

Meanwhile, Nigeria Vice President, Kashim Shettima after he met with the Super Eagles following their win over the Bafana Bafana of South Africa have promised that the Federal Government will reward footballers for their “commitment and dedication.”
The Super Eagles made this known in a statement and photos shared on their official social media handle early Thursday.
“The Federal Government has promised to reward the Super Eagles for their commitment and dedication in reaching the final of the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivore.
“Vice President Kashim Shettima told the players and their officials in the dressing room, following their hard-fought victory over South Africa in the semi finals on Wednesday, that the government and people of Nigeria are proud of their accomplishment.
“The VP was in company with Governors Dapo Abiodun (Ogun) and Duoye Diri (Bayelsa), Minister for Youths, Dr. Jamila Ibrahim as well as oil mogul, Wale Tinubu, FIFA Council member, Amaju Pinnick, and NFF President, Ibrahim Musa Gusau”, the Super Eagles said.
