Unknown Gunmen Attack Dreaded Red Beret Police Squad In Imo, Kill 2
Unknown Gunmen, suspected to be members of the Biafra secessionist armed group on Tuesday morning attacked special team of the Nigeria Police Force Counter Terrorism Unit, CTU, along Onitsha-Owerri Federal road at Mgbidi community in the Oru West Local Government Area of Imo State, killing two of the security operatives.
It was gathered that the Unknown Gunmen came in, through the Ibiasoegbe road and shot at the police special team unexpectedly.
The heavy gun battle forced passengers and other road users along the Onitsha-Owerri road on Tuesday to scamper for safety. And they were stranded for hours, according to eye witnesses.
The Counter Terrorism special police team, who usually put on black and black clothes with red beret, has been a well known security team fighting and reducing crime rates in Imo state since 2011 before the advent of unknown gunmen.
“The CTU here in Mgbidi, do serve as a back up to the military checkpoint at the front. Because all the bad people in Imo state know them very well. They themselves are very strong. They have killed alot of criminal suspects along this Onitsha-Owerri road at this Mgbidi CTU checkpoint”, a passenger said.
We learnt, the Tuesday morning attack, maybe the first time, the Police special CTU team suffered loss in a direct attack targeted at them, despite the number of times, Unknown Gunmen have attacked the special military checkpoint at Mgbidi.
