An official of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC identified as Abifade Tunji has allegedly Kidnapped a cab driver, Uyi Daniel in Benin City, the Edo State capital.
The Cab Driver in a video narrated how the EFCC Official hit his car on January 15, 2022 around Ihama road by Royal Marble hotel at the Government Reservation Area, GRA in Benin City and forced him into his compound, handcuffed his two hands and in addition chained the two hands to one of his legs with the help of his suspected gang members.
Uyi Daniel said his two hands were handcuffed and chained to his left leg and left abandoned to the suspected kidnapper’s burglary proof verandah all through the night beginning from 8-9 pm on January 15, 2022 till around 5 pm the following day January 16, 2022.
Uyi Daniel said immediately he observed his Audi 80 vehicle was hit behind by a white Toyota Venza car, he came out of his car to meet the driver of the Toyota Venza for possible settlement, to his surprise, the driver slapped him and within a short period, suspected gang members of the EFCC Official, Abifade Tunji started beating him.
He said the EFCC Official and his suspected gang members forced him to drive his Audi 80 car and parked it inside the compound of the Anti graft official.
He said immediately he drove and parked the vehicle, the suspected Kidnappers beat him and dragged him into the compound and he was handcuffed two hands and in addition the two hands chained to his left leg all through the night until a good samaritan, he described as elderly woman begged the EFCC Official to unchain him on the leg. He said the suspected criminal EFCC Official obliged the woman’s request, unchained his hands to his leg but adjusted the handcuff to tighten his two hands harder.
According to a human rights activist and a member of the Edo State Civil Society Organizations, Leftist Aimuae-Osa Igbinomwanhia, the suspected Kidnapper, Abifade Tunji demanded and collected a ransom of 30 thousand naira from Uyi Daniel’s father before the cab driver was released the following day.
“Mr. Abifade ordered some suspected ‘yahoo boys’ who were present within the vicinity to beat up Mr Uyi not knowing Mr Abifade’s house was close by. Uyi was abducted, tortured and dehumanised by Mr Abifade’s and his friends who seem to be very loyal to him. (They) hurled him into Abifade’s compound and handcuffed him to his burglary-proof like a common criminal till the following day till 5pm which was the 16th of January 2022, that was after Uyi’s father had paid the sum of N30, 000 (thirty thousand naira only) as ransom to secure the release of his son.
“Uyi Daniel who is a cab driver in Benin metropolis, on the 15th of January 2022 around 8:30pm in the evening was driving along Ihama Road, GRA by Royal Marble Hotel suddenly a white Toyota Venza hit his Audi 80 car from behind which caused Uyi’s back windscreen shattered.
“The Toyota Venza front bumper was also affected by the accident, and was damaged also. Uyi alighted from his vehicle (Audi 80) to see the level of damage as well as the owner of the White Toyota Venza. On seeing the damage on his Toyota Venza Mr. Abifade gave Mr Uyi a sounding slap on his face as narrated by Uyi.
“Abifade’s younger brother brought out a knife to stab Uyi but he was resisted by their neighbours. Uyi’s phone was confiscated thereby preventing Uyi from reaching his family, until the next day before his phone was given back to him to contact his family which prompted Uyi’s father to arrived Mr Abifade’s resident. At a point Mr Abifade threatened to shoot at Uyi with his gun which made his neighbours to back off finally.
“Abifade Tunji who later introduce himself as an EFCC official serving in the Benin zonal office asked Mr Daniel, Uyi’s father to fix his damaged Toyota Venza. Mr Daniel on sighting his son handcuffed to a burglary-proof, he had to go sought for money to release his son from Mr Abifade’s private detention facility.
“Mr Uyi Daniel Audi 80 car is still in Abifade’s compound on the ground that Mr Uyi will fix his car first. Efforts made by Mr Abifade’s neighbours to ensure that Mr Uyi Audi 80 is released back to him proved abortive as Mr Abifade threaten to use his service gun on anyone who will try to interfere with the situation, out of fear they all went into their various apartments.
“Uyi who later went to Aideyan Police Divisional Headquarters to lodge a formal complaint, but was told to write a formal petition to the Commissioner of Police or the AIG Zone 5 Benin, as the DCO was quoted saying “the matter pass us”, the Human rights activist said
Efforts to reach Abifade Tunji for comment proved abortive as all services line went off as at the time of filling in this report.
