Unknown Gunmen In Fresh Attack Kill 4 Police, FRSC Officials In Enugu
Unknown Gunmen have reportedly killed another set of policemen alongside with officials of Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, less than 24 hours after gunmen killed two policemen n stop and search duty in Enugu State.
Video made available by residents indicated that the security operatives were set ablaze after they were shot half dead as one of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC officials was seen in the video lifeless with part of his body burnt while trying to escape from the nearby burning vehicle.
It was gathered that the incident caused a palpable fear in Orba community in the Udenu local government area and Eha-Alumona community in Nsukka local government area of Enugu State where the killing of two policemen and two officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) on duty took place.
According to SaharaReporters, the attack may have started from Premier Junction at Eha-Alumona in Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State and proceeded to Army check point at Orba in Udenu Local Government Area of the state at about 4pm in the evening of Saturday, May 11, 2024 and lasted till 10pm.
Several policemen and officials of Road Safety Corps were said to have escaped with various degrees of injury as the hoodlums rained bullets non stop for hours.
Saharareporters report indicated further that: “the hoodlums also attacked and set ablaze a Hilux van belonging to His Royal Highness, Igwe Patrick Eze, popularly known as Igwe Waziri, the traditional ruler of Egali Amalla Community in Udenu Local Area of the Sate.
The monarch who was reportedly caught on the web of the attacks, miraculously escaped unhurt.
The gunmen also burnt the FRSC van during the carnage”.
Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah had promised to reward any informat who could provide information about the unknown gunmen who killed two policemen on Friday night in the state with the sum of ₦10 million.
Governor Mabah while speaking with newsmen on Saturday shortly after holding emergency state security council meeting with the state heads of security agencies, said preliminary information indicated that the unknown gunmen maybe members of Eastern Security Network, ESN, the armed affiliate of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB.
It would be recalled that the Nigeria Police Force had in a statement issued by the police spokesman in Enugu state, Daniel Ndukwe, said the two murdered policemen were on routine stop-and-search along the Presidential Road, Enugu, on Friday night when they suddenly came under attack by men who operated in three SUV jeeps.
He stated that the Commissioner of Police, Kanayo Uzuegbu, had ordered the deployment of the Command’s operational, tactical, and intelligence resources to sustain the ongoing operations to hunt down and bring the criminal elements to book.
According to Governor Mbah, his administration would go after the culprits with every resource at its disposal to bring the killers to book.
The Governor made the statement while briefing reporters after a State Security Council meeting at the Government House, Enugu, which also had in attendance, the state’s Commissioner of Police, Kanayo Uzuegbu; State Director, State Security Services, Theresa Egbunu; Garrison Commander, 82 Division, Nigerian Army, Enugu, Brigadier General Murtala Abu; and the State Commander, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Peter Ogar, among others.
Mbah said available security information pointed to men of the Eastern Security Network, a security outfit of the Indigenous People of Biafra.
Adding that the unknown gunmen came in several SUVs, among them a black Lexus SUV.
He called on members of the public to be on the lookout for the criminals and the exhibits, and report same to security agencies.
He stated in quote thus: “We just rounded off our Security Council meeting where we discussed, among other things, about the gruesome killing of our policemen – men of the Enugu State Police Command – by criminals suspected to be members of the ESN.
This bestial and cold-blooded action cannot be condoned in Enugu State. I have given my directives to the security agencies that there must be no hiding place for these criminals in Enugu State. We must use everything necessary to hunt down, arrest, and bring to justice the perpetrators of this heinous crime.
We have also placed a bounty of ₦10 million as a reward to anyone, who would have any useful information that will lead to the arrest of these criminals.
So, I enjoin members of the public to, please, come forward, or call the police and other security agencies with any useful information that could lead to the arrest of these criminals.
We do not have room to accommodate these people, these vagabonds, and these miscreants in our state.
We are going to do everything necessary to ensure that the ultimate sacrifice made by our valiant policemen does not go in vain.
Our condolences go to the bereaved families. I will also ensure that as government, we are going to provide the necessary support to the bereaved families.
Let me just also add that those who murder our policemen or indeed any member of our security agencies may assume that they have triumphed in their evil acts. Let me inform them that we are going to come after them with everything we have”.
