For more than 2 hours, Armed Forces of Biafra Republic often referred to as unknown gunmen engaged men of the Nigeria Police and Soldiers in a deadly gun battle after the Biafra gunmen ambushed and killed 2 operatives of the Department of State Services within the market area in Ekwulobia yesterday.

The gun battle which lasted between the hours of 10 in the morning and 12 in the afternoon yesterday left two persons dead.

Shortly after the attack, the governorship candidate of All Progressive Grand Alliance, APGA and former Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo proceeded to the Ekwulobia township mini stadium and held his electioneering campaign.

Some eye witnesses said they were in the market when the unknown gunmen attacked the convoy of the operatives of the Department of State Services, killing two of the operatives and moved in group to face Policemen and men of the Nigeria soldiers in a gun battle.

Some videos posted by onlookers showed the unknown gunmen ran towards the direction of the Nigeria soldiers with AK-47 riffles while they received praises from the residents.

Sources close to police said they received the bodies of security operatives but cannot ascertain if any of the unknown gunmen was killed during the gun battle.

Some residents claimed men of the Nigeria soldiers shot sporadically at innocent people and destroyed goods at the market after the unknown gunmen have left the scene.

One of the residents alleged that a Nigeria soldier shot directly at him but miraculously, the bullet only brushed through the hair of his head.
